At least 12 children died, while several others injured as van lost control and ran into a procession of children celebrating Maulud in Gombe.
Police confirmed that the driver of the van was lynched on the spot, saying the incident occurred at Malam Sidi town on Tuesday.
Confirming the incident, police spokesman in the state, Ahmed Usman, told Turkey’s Anadolu Agency early Wednesday that eight children died in the accident.
He added that 19 others were injured.
“We are aware that eight children died of injuries from an accident in the town of Malam Sidi. The children were taking part in what we understood was a Mawlid rally organized by various schools,” Mr. Usman said.
He said two arrests have been made in relation to the mob attack, while peace has been restored in the community which lies a few kilometers away from Gombe.
