A 17-year-old housewife, Salma Hassan, has allegedly killed her husband, Mohammed Mustapha, for forcing himself into her on their first matrimonial night in Itas Gadau Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
Speaking with newsmen on Thursday, shortly after being paraded at the state police command, the suspect confessed to stabbing her late husband but, according to her, not with the intent to kill him.
She claimed that when her late husband approached her for sexual intercourse, she told him that she did not like it because, according to her, it is an act of indiscipline and immorality.
According to her, she denied him because such an act was against her orientation and family upbringing.
“I married him because I loved him and he loved me too. But on our first night as newly wedded couple, he wanted to force himself onto me but I told him that I didn’t like it because I was told that it is ‘iskanci’ (Hausa word for immoral act).
“He, therefore, got angry and beat me up. I took a knife and stabbed him not knowing that it would kill him. I never intended to kill him because I stabbed him gently. But he bled, and was rushed to a hospital where he died,” she narrated.
However, briefing newsmen, the state Commissioner of Police, Philip Maku, said the suspect is 18 years old, not 17 as she claimed.
According to him, the suspect allegedly murdered her spouse on April 27 after which his officers at Itas Gadau LG division arrested her and recovered a knife.
“On the 24th of April 2020 at about 9pm, one Haruna Musa of Itas Gadau reported at Itas Gadau division that one Salma Hassan, 18 years of the same address stabbed her husband one Mohammed Mustapha on the chest as a result, he sustained serious injury and was rushed to general hospital Itas Gadau for treatment where he was certified dead.
“The suspect was arrested and confessed to the crime. Exhibit recovered from the suspect was one knife,” he said.
