2 men docked over alleged N1.2m visa scam

The police on Monday arraigned two  men: Isaac Adegoke, 35, and Victor Akinbobola, 40, for allegedly obtaining N1, 215 ,000 to procure visas and tickets for some people.

The defendants, Adegoke of Iyana Church area, Ibadan, and Akinbobola of 5, Dalemo Odewale St., Alakuko near Lagos were docked at an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan.

They are facing a three- count charge of conspiracy, obtaining money under false pretences and stealing.

The prosecutor, Sunday Ogunremi told the court that Adegoke and Akinbobola allegedly conspired with others now at large to commit the offences.

Mr Ogunremi, an assistant superintendent of police, said the duo was alleged to have fraudulently obtained N1, 215,000 under the pretext that they would obtain visas and tickets to relatives of one Olusola Adenigba of Apete in Ibadan.

According to the prosecutor, the duo failed to obtain the visas and tickets promised the complainants.

He said that the accused committed the offences in February 2017 at Sango area of Ibadan.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 390 (9), 419 and 516A (1) of the Criminal code Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State, 2004.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Chief Magistrate Abdulateef Adebisi granted the defendants bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Mr Adebisi said one of the sureties must be a blood relation to the defendants, while the other must be gainfully employed.

He adjourned the case until March 19 for hearing.
