The Zamfara State governor, Abdulaziz Yari, has finally dumped his deputy, Ibrahim Wakkala, and endorsed his commissioner for Finance, Mukhtar Idris (Kogunan Gusau) for the APC governorship ticket.
Reliable sources told DAILY NIGERIAN that the governor took the decision at a recent meeting with party stakeholders.
DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that Mr Wakalla’s candidature is sponsored by the immediate-past governor of the state, Ahmed Yerima.
Mr Yerima, a serving senator, had also given up his seat for the governor to contest.
The minister of Defense Mansur Dan-Ali has also thrown his hat into the ring, but feelers say his chances of picking the ticket are slim despite his connections at the Presidency.
Sources said all the party executives in the 14 local government areas and 147 wards in the state have endorsed the governor’s candidate. With such endorsement, backed by the governor’s support, the primaries will simply be a walkover.
“In Zamfara, we are used to consensus. It was consensus that brought the present governor and his deputy.
“Serving governor in Zamfara has the final say, and our governor has spoken. Even if Wakkala insists in purchasing nomination form, it will be a waste of time as the governor’s choice, Kogunan Gusau, will beat him hands down,” a party executive who preferred not to be named told DAILY NIGERIAN.
The APC in Zamfara state had earlier zoned the governorship position of the party to the central zone as contenders in the zone battle for the party’s ticket.
Both Messrs Idris and Wakkala are from the central zone.
