About 21,000 members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Zamfara State.
The defectors were jointly received by the governor of the state, Bello Matawalle and the state PDP Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Mallaha, in Gusau, the capital of the state, on Sunday.
Most of the defectors were from the governor’s Maradun Local Government.
Speaking at the event, the governor commended the defectors for “taking the bold step” that would take the state forward.
He urged Zamfara residents to continue to be law abiding, and particularly cautioned them against violence that could retard progress.
In his remark, the PDP state chairman promised to treat the new entrants “like any other member of the party.”
In May, the Supreme Court nullified the electionsof all the candidates of the APC in the state in the 2019 general election, for notconduct valid primaries in the build-up to the elections.
The court then ruled that the runners-up were the winners of the respective elections. The runners-up were PDP candidates, save for one.
