Justice Mustapha Akanbi, the pioneer chairman of Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, and a former president of Nigeria’s Court of Appeal is dead.
He was 85.
Family sources said he died at about 2am on Sunday morning and was expected to be buried later today according to Islamic rites.
Born September 11, 1932, in Accra, Ghana, the late jurist was educated in Nigeria and London.
He was called to the English Bar in 1963 and was called to the Nigerian Bar in January 1964.
He joined the Ministry of Justice and became a Senior State Counsel in 1968. In 1969 he set up in private practice in Kano.
Mr Akanbi was appointed Judge of the Federal Revenue Court, (now known as the Federal High Court) in 1974.
He retired voluntarily in 1999 as President of the (Nigerian) Court of Appeal after serving for 25 years.
In 2000, President Olusegun Obasanjo appointed him the first chairman of ICPC for a term of five years and declined renewal of his term in 2015.
He was a receipient of Commander of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, GCFR.
