The rift in the Kano State politics has continued to deepen as Deputy Governor Hafiz Abubakar is allegedly falling out with Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, State Assembly getting enmeshed in political hiccup resulting in the impeachment of Speaker Yusuf Ata who is believed to be loyal to a former governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, an arch-rival to Mr Ganduje.
Recall that few hours after the State Assembly Speaker was impeached, the state deputy governor had petitioned the police and State Security Service, SSS, over threat to his life and plans to impeach him.
Mr Abubakar, a loyalist of Mr Kwankwaso, had been at loggerheads with the state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, for siding with the former governor in the political impasse in the state.
In a petition addressed to Kano State police commissioner and copied to the Assistant Inspector General in charge of Zone I and the state director of the SSS, the deputy governor sought deployment of security personnel around him.
But, Mr Ganduje’s Commissioner of Information, Youth and Culture, Muhammad Garba, in a statement on Wednesday, stated that the deputy governor is “too insignificant for government to commit state resources to orchestrate a plan to remove him from office, talk less of any attempt on his life.”
However, while expressing dismay over the unguarded utterances made by the state deputy governor, Mr Garba described the Mr Abubakar’s allegation as an unfounded, false.
According to the statement, to prove that the allegations made by the deputy governor were false, he was at today’s state Executive Council Meeting, and he came with fewer security aides.
“At the meeting, when His Excellency had to excuse himself to embark on a trip, he directed the deputy governor to preside over as usual, and that all the resolutions reached at the meeting are binding, something that would not have been accorded him by his political godfather, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso,” the statement added.
Mr Garba pointed out that despite several unguarded comments by the deputy governor, the government continues to accord respect and support for his office both morally and otherwise.
The statement debunked allegation that he has not been provided with statutory official residence, pointing out that it was his choice to remain in the private residence as he personally brought the contractor that is handling the construction of his official residence.
It also advised the embattled deputy governor to make a choice of quitting or remaining in the government.
