The governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, has declared Monday, March 30, as a fasting and prayer day for the people to pray against the outbreak of Coronavirus in the state.
The governor made the declaration on Sunday while inaugurating a 37-member Fund Raising Committee on COVID-19 in the state.
“I call on Kano people to observe fasting tomorrow, 30th March which is equivalent to 5th Sha’aban and pray hard against the outbreak of coronavirus in our dear state.
“I also called on people to intensify prayers because prayer is the best fire for this disease,” he said.
Speaking on the committee, Mr Ganduje said there was a need to raise funds and materials to assist the poor people and the downtrodden in cushioning the effects of the lockdown in the state.
“While we are putting effort to take preventive and curative measures against the coronavirus pandemic, there are some groups of people who cannot earn a living, who must go out to fend for their families.
“There are also those who are economically weak and must be affected during this trying time. That is why we decided to form a committee to raise money in order to help them cushion the effects,” he noted.
The governor also appealed to the retired health workers in the state to volunteer in the fight against the pandemic, calling on the interested retirees to register with the Ministry of Health.
In his remarks, the chairman of the committee, Prof. Yahuza Bello, commended the governor for coming up with the idea to support the needy.
Mr Bello, who is the Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University Kanom expressed his readiness to work diligently towards actualising the goals of forming the committee.
DAILY NIGERIAN reports that part of the committee’s terms of reference includes identifying organizations and individuals for donations; and identifying the materials to be donated as well as the beneficiaries.
The committee was given one week to submit its report.
