The Bayero University Kano, BUK, has terminated the contract appointment of five of its lecturers, in line with the Federal Government’s directive excluding contract lecturers on the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, IPPIS.
Confirming the development, the BUK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Muhammad Yahuza-Bello, said the university had given the affected lecturers 40-day notice, instead of 30 days, before termination of their appointment.
The VC noted that the university took the decision in line with the Federal Government directive to stop payment of contract lecturers when the full staff are enrolled on IPPIS.
“It is a condition to enrol staff in the salary payment platform of IPPIS. And the federal government made it clear that except the university would pay such staff from its internally generated revenue which we cannot,” the VC disclosed.
Mr Yahuza-Bello further said that the termination of the contract staff appointment would not weigh down the institution as there are about 1, 776 academic staff working in the institution.
One of the affected contract lecturers, Dr Sai’du Dukawa, a former Director-General at Kano Hisbah Board, confirmed the development to Solacebase newspaper on Thursday.
According to him, his contract appointment was terminated on Wednesday.
He explained that the university had informed him that the termination of his 7-year contract was in line with the Federal Government directive for staff to enrol on the new salary scale, IPPIS, or fire them.
“I have been on contract with the university for 7 years and my contract is renewed every two years. The contract is supposed to be renewed next year before it was terminated yesterday,” said Mr Dukawa.
