4,000 athletes storm Enugu for FEDCOL Games

As over 5,000 teen athletes and officials converge in Enugu for the 13th Federal Government Colleges’ Games, tagged ‘FEDCOL 2016,’ the Federal Government has assured Nigerians of its commitment to sports development as an instrument for national cohesion, development, peace and progress.

Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Gozie Anwukah, who made the commitment on behalf of the Federal Government while declaring the 13th Edition of the FEDCOL Games open at the Michael Okpara Square in Enugu yesterday, said his ministry will continue to support the building of teachers’ capacity to enhance the teaching and learning of Physical and Health Education, as well as practical sports activities at all levels of education.

The minister revealed that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) had commenced the practical examination in the area of Physical and Health Education for the 2015/2016 academic session, noting that the National Examinations Council (NECO) began the implementation since 2008.

Prof. Anwukah announced that the Federal Government in collaboration with the British Council, the United Nations International Children’s Education Fund (UNICEF) and other stakeholders have developed a National Physical Education and Schools Sports Policy, as well as its implementation guidelines in order to provide an organized programme for pupils and students at the nursery, basic and secondary education levels.
