Kano govt moves to increase retirement age for teachers

The Kano State Government has set up a committee to review the Scheme and Condition Service for teachers in the state.

The state Commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba, made the disclosure in a statement on Saturday in Kano.

He said that was among the resolutions at the State Executive Council meeting.

Mr Garba explained that the committee would draft a harmonised retirement age for teachers in the state, effective from January.

“The committee has been mandated to constitute the necessary cause for action toward implementing this laudable initiative.

“With a view to accommodating the new retirement age of teachers from 35 years of service to 40 years, and from 60 years of age to 65 years, respectively,” he said.

Mr Garba also said that the council had approved the recruitment of 704 forest guards/forest range officers on a casual basis.

According to him, the forest guards will work in the 404 grazing reserves and 300 forest estates, respectively.

Mr Garba further disclosed that the council approved the revalidation of the contract for the provision of sports facilities at Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano.
He explained that “the contract was awarded in 2014 at the cost of N29, 691, 613.60”.

Mr Garba noted that the contract consisted of construction of football pitch, two standard basketball court, two standard handball courts, standard hockey and lawn tennis pitches.

“It has now been revalidated and the contract revised to N145, 299, 258.43 to cover the prevailing rise in the cost of construction materials,” he said.
