A fire outbreak on Friday burnt relief materials worth N18.5 million at a relief warehouse located at First Lady College, Mariri, Kumbotso Local Government area of Kano State.
DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that all the materials and other parts of the school were burnt to ashes.
Narrating the incident, the Executive Secretary of SEMA, Saleh Jili, said the emergency relief items were completely razed by the inferno.
He said, hundreds of pieces of mattress, pillows and diapers had been completely burnt, adding that grinding machines, sewing machines, vulcanizing machine, detergents and other items were also lost.
Mr Jili said the items were received from the Federal Government to assist Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs.
“The fire started from three classes which extended to our store. The classes and store had been burnt to ashes.
“The items that were in the store include 450 mattresses, 450 pillow case, 665 cartons of diapers, 10 cartons each of Dettol, detergent and izal.
“We also have grinding machine, sewing machine, vulcanizing machine and mosquito nets that were all kept in that store. This store is used for storing relief materials donated to victims of fire accident and flooding,” he added.
The Executive Secretary said offices, classes, roofing and desks were also burnt during the fire incident.
He disclosed that an estimated N18.5 million property had been lost in the fire incident.
He said a team would visit the school to assess the level of damages for onward submission to the government for possible assistance.
“His Excellency [Governor Abdullahi Ganduje] is dedicated to educational improvement and there’s no doubt that he will take the necessary action so the students of the school are not affected,” he said.
Mr Jili attributed the fire to grass burning, and charged the general public to be more vigilant and desist from grass burning and other similar acts, capable of inciting fire and similar disasters.
