The National Union of Teachers, NUT, in Adamawa has urged the state government to implement N30,000 minimum wage for its members to enhance delivery of quality education.
NUT Chairman, Rodney Nathan made the call in an address to mark the 2022 World Teachers Day in Yola on Wednesday.
He appealed for the implementation of promotion arrears for primary school teachers, and payment of 27.5 per cent professional allowance to all qualified teachers.
The chairman stressed the need for the expansion of five-year elongation of service for teachers to cover all categories of teachers.
“Teachers are determined to actualise government drive to transform the education sector,” he said.
In his remarks, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Malam Bashir Ahmed, reiterated commitment towards improvement of teachers’ welfare.
He said his administration had recruited 2,000 teachers, constructed over 10,000 classrooms and staff quarters while thousands of teachers benefitted from its promotion exercise.
“We are transforming education sector through introduction of free education from primary to secondary school level, payment of WAEC and NECO examination fees to indigent students.
“We recorded 75 per cent credits including English and Mathematics in the just concluded Senior Secondary School Examination SSCE conducted by WAEC,” he added.
The governor tasked the teachers to reciprocate the gesture and dedicate themselves to duty to achieve academic excellence.
12 teachers were presented with prizes for outstanding performances.
Other highlights of the event included lectures, plays and cultural dances.
