The Senate president, Bukola Saraki, on Tuesday read a letter from President Muhammadu Buhari, renominating Ibrahim Magu for confirmation as substantive chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

This is contrary to the position held by the Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Ita Enang.

While reacting to media reports that the president, who is currently on a 10-day annual vacation, had sent a letter to the Senate insisting on the confirmation of Mr Magu, Mr Enang on Monday said he was not aware of such letter.

“I am not aware of that discussion and I don’t want to speak on the matter because I don’t have details,” he said.

On December 15, 2016, the Senate rejected the request for the confirmation of Mr. Magu based on security reports from the State Security Service, SSS.

The presidency had in July 2016 written the Senate, requesting the screening and confirmation of Mr Magu as substantive chairman of EFCC but the Senate did not invite him until December last year.

Mr Buhari appointed Mr Magu as acting chairman of the EFCC after the removal of Ibrahim Lamorde on November 9, 2015.
