A former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Mr Abubakar, who is currently 77 years old, disclosed this during an interview with Voice of America Hausa service.

DAILY NIGERIAN reports that the next election will be his seventh attempt at the presidential seat.

According to Mr Abubakar, he will continue to contest as long as he is alive and healthy.

When asked if he would contest the 2027, Mr Abubakar said, “Insha Allahu,” meaning by Gid grace.

“Of course, I will keep contesting as long as I am alive and healthy.

“Even the former US President Abraham Lincoln contested seven times before finally winning.

The former vice president emphasised the need to form alliances between opposition parties saying the current strength of PDP alone can’t defeat the incumbent All Progressives Congress, APC.

“However, given the current state of the PDP, it is clear that a single-handed effort will not suffice to win the election. Strong support and collaboration with other parties are required,” he added.

Mr Abubakar also reiterated his pledge to support the zoning arrangements of the party.
