UNPFA, NRSC train Plateau health workers on reproductive, maternal care for women in crisis areas

The United Nations Population Fund, UNPFA, in partnership with the Nigerian Red Cross Society, NRSC , has trained 50 health workers on basic reproductive, maternal and child health during emergencies in Plateau State.

Speaking during the closing ceremony of the 10-day capacity building workshop for nurses, midwives and CHEWs in the state, the UNPFA lead team, Matthew Onoja, said the Fund would continue to deliver humanitarian and health related services to people of the state, mostly affected by crises.

He said: “With the training imparted in the health workers, it is hopeful that participants will give the desired support to persons in dire need of basic reproductive, maternal and child health during emergencies.”

According to him, the UNPFA, while taking assessments in the aftermath of the last crises in Mangu, Bokkos and Barkin Ladi, noticed some gaps that called for building the capacity of health workers in the state.

On his part, the Plateau State branch Secretary of the Red Cross, Nuruddeen Hussain-Magaji, said collaborating with the UNPFA would help in supporting women and children, being the most vulnerable people in society.

“We will continue to put in our best to ensure that those in need get the desired help,” he said.

Speaking on the training, the Permanent Secretary, Plateau Ministry of health, Horlong Turnoe Hoomkwap, said the participating health workers have acquired necessary skills to handle cases of women and children affected by crises, especially issues of rape, pregnancy, and family planning.

“We will make sure that the training is cascaded down to those that are not here. We will continue to collaborate with the Red Cross, and the UNPFA. They have been our partners, donors and funders,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the participants, Afaya Maton Haruna, and Victoria Yunana Madaki, expressed their appreciations for the new skills and imparted in them.

Certificates were issued to the 50 participants drawn from Bokkos, Mangu, Barkin Ladi, Jos South, Jos North, Jos East, Bassa and Riyom LGAs of the State.
