‘Window on America’ centre unveiled at ABU Zaria

The US Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills Jr, on Wednesday inaugurated an American space (window on America) at Ahmadu Bello Universit, ABU, Zaria to enhance educational opportunities, interaction and research development.

The envoy, who was accompanied by his wife and other key officers of the Embassy at the inauguration said the centre was the 27th in Nigeria out of over 600 across 140 countries worldwide.

He said the space represented one of the best American values that would be open to enable people learn about America.

“Americans believe that one of its greatest values was people to people interaction across the globe.

“It is one of the best way to move the world forward, makes it prosper and maintain peace,” he said.

Mills said the space would offer wide range of programmes and activities on topics such as enterprenuership, media literacy and Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) training.

Others are education advisory and continuing education in the United States.

The envoy further stated that there would also be various workshops at the centre to enhance career skills for the graduates of the university and the Zaria community.

He added that the centre would also offer training on English language learning, saying, “this is one of the most popular thing we do in most of the centres across the globe.”

Earlier, Prof. Kabir Bala, Vice-Chancellor, ABU and the envoy had signed an Memorandum of Understanding on education and cultural exchange.

In his remarks, Bala said applauded the U. S. embassy for the initiative especially the entrepreneurship component of the programme.

He said all the topics to be addressed by the centre were germaine and interesting to the students and ABU community.

Mr Bala said the centre would improve ABU’s collaboration with the US through its Fullbright Scholars.

He added that ABU would leverage on its robust alumni and over 40 Fullbright scholars to boost mentorship in the university’s community.
