Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have reportedly attacked Izge village, Gwoza local government area of Borno state, killing an army captain and a corporal.

According to a Daily Trust report, the terrorists overran the Izge military formation, firing Rocket Propelled Grenade, RPG, and other weapons.

“A captain and a corporal were among those that paid the supreme price, but many insurgents were killed during the encounter,” a security source was quoted as saying.

He, however, said he was yet to get the actual casualties on both sides.

“But scores of the terrorists were killed during the clash,” he said.

The report further quoted sources as saying that a large number of attackers riding motorcycles invaded the military location after firing a Rocket Propelled Grenade, RPG, on them.

“They overpowered the military, but hunters and vigilantes in the town reinforced the military and subdued the attackers.

“It was a fierce battle, but the troops of the Izge platoon formation ‘Operation Hadin Kai’ were very resilient, the terrorists were overpowered, and many of them dropped dead and others abandoned their motorcycles,” he said.

Reacting to the incident, the senator representing Borno South, Ali Ndume, expressed his worry about consistent Boko Haram attacks in the region.

He appealed to the federal government to deploy modern technology for surveillance to help security agencies effectively fight the terrorists.
