NITDA commissions cybersecurity centre in Kano

National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, has commissioned a Cybersecurity Centre in Bayero University Kano, BUK, in Kano State.

Delivering a speech at the commissioning ceremony, held at the new campus of the university on Tuesday, the Director General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa, said the unveiling of the facility was aimed at activating knowledge-driven national asset.

Mr Inuwa, represented by Dr Jide Ajayi, head of NITDA’s Northwest zonal office, said the centre was designed to equip the nation with the tools, talent, and infrastructure required.

According to him, the initiative will safeguard digital space and empower the next generation of cybersecurity experts.

He disclosed that the centre is part of NITDA’s intervention to support cybersecurity education, capacity development, research and development, and innovation which “are essential to achieving the aspirations of the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the Minister’s Strategic Blueprint”.

Mr Inuwa noted that cybersecurity had become a critical enabler of trust in the digital economy, adding that as digital transformation accelerates, so do the risks associated with data breaches, cyber threats, and digital vulnerabilities.

Mr Inuwa stated that NITDA’s engagement with Kano State and BUK has been both strategic and long-standing.

“Over the years, NITDA has implemented various programmes and interventions in this region to expand digital inclusion, enhance capacity building, and foster innovation.

“This Centre will serve as a springboard for cross-sector collaboration between government, academia, and industry. It will support cybersecurity research, facilitate hands-on training, and serve as a resource hub for national and regional stakeholders working to protect Nigeria’s critical digital infrastructure,” he said.

The DG also hinted that NITDA and the Office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA, would co-host the inaugural National Cybersecurity Conference from 9th to 10th July 2025 at the Abuja Continental Hotel.

“This high-level, government-led gathering will convene global cybersecurity leaders, policymakers, and innovators to shape the future of AI-powered digital protection and strengthen our national cyber resilience.

“I encourage stakeholders here today to actively participate in this landmark event as we consolidate efforts across sectors and regions,” he appealed.
