Ganduje seeks life imprisonment for rape suspect of infant

Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje has directed the state Ministry of Justice to immediately commence the prosecution of man who allegedly raped a six-month-old infant in Kano.

A statement by the commissioner for Information, Youth and Culture, Muhammad Garba, the governor expressed sadness by the story of and directed the state ministry of justice to handle the matter properly by ensuring that it is pursued to the latter.

“Whoever is involved in this sordid sexual crime will be prosecuted under the relevant provisions contained in the Kano State Penal Code Amendment Law referred to as the ‘Principal Law’ as amended under Section 283,” the government said.

“Whoever commits rape, shall be punished with imprisonment for life or for any lesser term not below fourteen years and shall be liable to a fine of two Hundred Thousand Naira (N200,000) and in addition thereto be required by Court to pay compensation to the victims”.

“It is despicable, dastardly and condemnable act which is alien to our religious and cultural values, more so of a baby.

“This is indicative of how brutalised and unfeeling perpetrators of such heinous crimes have become and therefore deserve nothing more than a punishment proportionate to their crimes.”

The statement assures the parents of the baby that appropriate legal action would be taken.

The state government also said it would foot the medical bill of the victim.

It advised parent to as part of collective effort to bring to an end the high incidence of rape, particularly against the minors.

The government also urged parents to always look after their wards, their movement and the type of company they keep.

The statement also charged the clergy to use their places of worship to propagate the dangers of rape.
