The management of National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, in Edo, has appealed to employers to provide accommodation and other supportive facilities for corps members.
The State Coordinator of NYSC, Yusuf Abdullahi, made the appeal on Thursday in Okada at the swearing-in ceremony of the 2017 Batch ‘B’ stream one orientation course.
Mr Abdullahi said the provision would make the corps members feel wanted and fully integrate into their employments.
He said that the NYSC members, who would be leaving camp on December 11, would be posted to specific areas of critical need for the enhancement of rural health care delivery and education.
Other areas are rural infrastructure and agricultural development to assist the state government to ensure rural development, Mr Abdullahi said.
He said 2, 250 corps members were registered to serve in the state.
Mr Abdullahi appealed to the government to fulfil its promise in respect of the completion of the NYSC Orientation Camp and speedy renovation of the zonal office in Oredo Local Government Area.
Meanwhile Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo has urged NYSC members to join in the fight against economic crimes as well as women and children trafficking, drug trafficking and other vices through mass and adult literacy programmes.
Mr Obaseki, represented by Mr Mika Amanokha, Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, said the success of any service year was dependent on the foundation laid during the orientation period.
He said that in view of this, the management of the scheme had taken steps to introduce the skills acquisition and entrepreneurship training programmes.
He admonished the corps members to take the activities seriously in order to adequately equip themselves toward becoming employers of labour in future.
He further urged them to see the NYSC period as an opportunity to selflessly serve their fatherland.
The Chairman of the State NYSC Governing Board, represented by Osagie Obakpolor, gave an assurance that government was already tackling the issue of the completion of the permanent orientation camp.
He also said that corps employers would henceforth be routinely monitored to ensure that they provided accommodation for NYSC members.
