A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, also known as Secretary to the Armed Forces Ruling Council, Gidado Idris, is dead.
Family sources said the former SGF passed away on Friday night after brief illness at the age of 82.
The late Gidado Idris attended Institute of Administration, Zaria and University of Leeds in the United Kingdom.
He served as District Officer for Benue, Sardauna and Adamawa provinces before his appointment as Personal Secretary to the late Premier of Northern Nigeria, Ahmadu Bello.
He later served as Permanent Secretary in Kaduna State service between 1971 and 1975.
In 1975, he was appointed Secretary of the Constitution Drafting Committee, and became the Secretary to the Constituent Assembly a year later.
The late Gidado Idris was appointed Clerk to the National Assembly in the in 1979.
He held various positions after the overthrow of the civilian administration, which include the Secretary and Director of Administration at the National Institute of Strategic Studies, Kuru, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Police Affairs (1984-1986), Chairman of Productivity, Prices and Income Board (1986 and 1988), Permanent Secretary Ministry of Aviation, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Finance, among others.
He was appointed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation by the military regime of Sani Abacha in 1993 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1999.
Late Idris, a master scribe and recordkeeper, drafted and typed the dethronement letter served on the Emir of Kano, Muhammed Sanusi I, in 1963.
A recipient of many honours and awards, Gidado Idris is survived by a wife and 11 children.
