Less than 24 hours after the announcement of local government election results, the Kano state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has sworn-in the newly-elected chairmen of the 44 Local Government Councils in the state.
The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, had swept all the 44 chairmanship and 484 concillorship seats, in the just concluded election, conducted Saturday, February 10.
Although the state government had described the election as free and fair, observers believe it was marred by irregularities such as underage voting and ballot box stuffing.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium in the Kano metropolis, on Sunday.
The oath of office was administered by the state’s Attorney General, Ibrahim Mukhtar.
Speaking after the swearing-in ceremony, Mr Ganduje, described the election as another milestone towards the growth of the nascent democracy in the history of the state.
He added that the election was well conducted, adding that it was greeted by large turnout of voters.
Mr Ganduje recalled that his administration wanted to hold the election last year, but suspended the poll due to lack of fund.
“But now we provided enough resources for the election. We also reformed the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission, KANSIEC.
“We followed the constitution of our great party, APC, in conducting the election. We followed all the rules and regulations, governing the conduct of election in our party.
“The 44 candidates emerged through reconciliation and mutual understanding.
He therefore charged the newly-elected chairmen to be honest and dedicated in discharging their constitutional duties.
The governor also urged them to work hand in hand with the stakeholders, the executive, Ulamas, State House of Assembly members, businessmen and security agencies, for the overall development of the state.
