A Kano state High Court presided over by Justice Sanusi Ma’aji has adjourned the arraignment of Chinese national, Geng Quangrong, who is accused of killing his 23-year old lover, Ummukulthum Buhari (Ummita), at her family house in Kano.
DAILY NIGERIAN reports that Mr Quanrong was first arraigned on a one-count charge of culpable homicide, contrary to Section 221 of the Penal Code, before Magistrate Hanif Yusuf of Magistrate Court 30, Sabongari, Kano.
However, at the resumption of the case on Thursday, the accused appeared without a lawyer to defend him.
He therefore prayed to the court to adjourn the matter to enable him get counsel to represent him.
Responding, Kano State Attorney General, Musa Lawan, did not raise an objection to the accused’s prayer to adjourn the matter.
He said, “Obviously this case will not go on today without a counsel, standing for the defendant. The offense iis capital in nature. In the circumstances, we apply for a short adjournment to enable the defendant to get a lawyer.”
Mr Ma’aji then adjourned the case to October 4.
