The reign of daredevil kidnappers on Abuja-Kaduna expressway may have come to an end as Nigeria police tasked hero cop, Abba Kyari, on busting the kidnapping ring.
In an interview with the BBC Hausa Service monitored in Abuja on Friday, Mr Kyari said after the arrest of notorious kidnapper Evans and deadly other, Vampire, they are now focused on arresting the Abuja-Kaduna highway kidnappers.
The Nigeria Police had in June deployed 600 special squad to Abuja-Kaduna expressway to check the menace of kidnapping and armed robbery along the road.
“We are now deeply committed to solving Kaduna (kidnapping) issue. We made significant progress. We made some arrests and they cooperated with us by giving us some names,” Mr Kyari, an assistant commissioner of police, said.
He said they are also on the trail of kidnapping gangs in Kogi and Edo States.
Mr Kyari said the present administration had procured sophisticated tracking equipment for installation in some parts of the country.
“Previously we had only one. But three more equipment were procured for installation in Imo and Lagos. We now have three installed in Abuja, Imo and Lagos. The president has promised more for Kano and Sokoto,” he said.
In the interview, Mr Kyari also gives survival tips for kidnap victims, revealing that telling kidnappers you don’t have money at all is met by death.
“If you are kidnapped, don’t be stubborn. Be level headed because they will easily kill person and go. Don’t tell them you don’t have money at all. If you tell them so they will be angry.
“Take it easy with them and tell them you are not rich but tell them you have something to offer.
“Don’t tell them you are rich man because if they realize you are rich, they will demand a huge ransom.
“Some people out of panic reveal what is in their bank account. Don’t let them know you have, say N20million in your account. If you have that amount, tell them you only have N500,000 in your account and that you can borrow something to add up.”
