Armed kidnappers on Saturday opened fire on travelers near Jere on Abuja-Kaduna expressway.
DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that the kidnappers killed two people and allegedly abducted several others.
On July 22, the kidnappers killed a female professor, an army officer and a police officer, just as they kidnapped scores of travelers near Gidan Busa village, located between Jere and Kateri along the expressway.
But one of the victims of the latest attack, Abubakar Barau, told DAILY NIGERIAN that the kidnappers dashed onto the road from the bush and started firing at vehicles.
“I was traveling from Zaria to Abuja when we just noticed 3 people on the road shortly after 5pm. No sooner had I overtook a bus than they opened fire on us without flagging us down to stop.
“On impulse, I decided to run over one of them but they dispersed and kept firing. I understood that even if I stopped, they will kill us so I sped off.
“We were lucky that we survived, although vehicle was riddled with bullets.
“When we reached an area Kateri, we noticed a police post. So stopped we stopped to report the matter and change one of our tyres shot by the attackers.
“Unfortunately, the police said they could not confront them, advising them to hurriedly fix their tyre and leave the area.
“While changing the tyre, we did not see a single vehicle passed. They apparently succeeded in stopping many vehicle and blocking the road.
“We later learnt that they killed two people and abducted many,” he told DAILY NIGERIAN.
Spokesman for Kaduna Police Command, Yakubu Sabo, confirmed the killing of two passengers in the attack.
He however said the police immediately mobilised to the scene and engaged the kidnappers.
“They opened fire on a bus, killing two passengers around 6pm on Saturday. The police immediately mobilised to the scene and aborted the abduction of the driver of the bus.
“There is intensive aerial and ground patrol along the expressway. I can assure you that we will not rest oars,” he added.
