ANN condemns police arrest of Premium Times’ Journalist

Alliance for New Nigeria, ANN, on Thursday, condemned the recent arrest of a Premium Times journalist, Samuel Ogundipe who is being detained by the Nigerian Police for an undisclosed offence.

A statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Akinloye Oyeniyi, lamented the incessant harassment of journalists and media houses by the government agencies under the Buhari administration.

According to Mr Oyeniyi, the arrest of the journalist was unwarranted and unacceptable in any democracy.

He reminded the Nigerian police of the Code of Ethics for Nigerian Journalists code-named ‘Ilorin Declaration 1998’, Code 4 Sub (i) which states that, “ a journalist should observe the universally accepted principle of confidentiality and should not disclose the source of information obtained in confidence.”

The publicity secretary, therefore, called for immediate and unconditional release of the reporter who, according to him, is languishing in the Police cell.
