The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has approved the appointment of Abdullahi Abbas as acting chairman of the party in Kano State.

Mr. Abbas will hold the position in acting capacity until the election of a substantive chairman.

Crisis broke out in the party when a faction led by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje mulled taking discplinary action against his predecessor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, for allegedly “destabilizing the peace in the state” during a condolence visit to the governor.

The decision of the party was stated in a letter dated December 12 and signed by the vice chairman of the party in charge of North West, Inuwa Abdulkadir.

“The North West Zonal Executive Committee at its meeting held in Dutse, Jigawa State has resolved that you continue to act as the chairman of Kano State chapter of our great party until a state congress is held  for the purpose of electing a substantive Chairman,” the letter read.

In March 2016, the state chapter of the party nominated Mr. Abbas as acting chairman, following the removal of the substantive chairman, Umar Doguwa, at an emergency congress.

There is still concern among the party leaders as to whether the party’s decision may bring an end to the protracted leadership crisis that divided the party in the state.
