An All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator representing Bauchi North, Adamu Bulkachuwa, has backed moves by some lawmakers to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari over rising insecurity in the country.
DAILY NIGERIAN reports that Mr Bulakchuwa is the second lawmaker of the ruling party to support the impeachment move after Elisha Abbo of Adamawa North, barely a week after opposition lawmakers had called for the president’s removal from office.
Recall that on July 27, opposition senators had during plenary issued a six-week ultimatum to the president to address the worsening security situation in the country or face impeachment.
Explaining his reasons for backing the impeachment move during an interview with the Channels TV, Mr Bulkachuwa said the impeachment is the last and necessary option left for the lawmakers after their many efforts to help the president tackle insecurity became unsuccessful.
Mr Bulkachuwa added that the lawmakers had also engaged the service chiefs and other security personnel, “to find out what their problems are and when they tell us, we try to find solutions and also advise the President accordingly”.
“Even the financial situation in the country is not improving. We are just one arm of government and are limited in the execution of proposals and actual enforcement of laws.
“So what we can do is remind the executive that we have a constitutional responsibility to pull your ears by way of notice of impeachment and give you chance to see that you care,” he said.
Mr Bulakchuwa also revealed that many lawmakers of the APC supported the plans when the issue was raised during a closed-door meeting.
He added: “On that day, the Senate went into closed session and it was at the closed session that these issues were discussed, and without divulging so much, I can tell you that the majority of senators felt there was a need to initiate that action.
“I said it was the majority. It wasn’t a 100 percent unanimous agreement per se, but the majority supported it.”
