Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Gheit on Wednesday welcomed a decision made by Norway, Ireland and Spain to recognise the Palestinian state,
calling it “an important step.”
“I salute and thank the three countries for this step that puts them on the right track in the history of conflict,” Aboul Gheit said on social media platform X.
He called on other countries who haven’t taken a similar move to follow the three countries in their courageous preliminary steps.
“I congratulate Palestine on this positive development,” he said.
Ireland, Norway and Spain announced on Wednesday that they would recognise Palestine as a state.
“Each of us will undertake whatever national steps are necessary to give effect to that decision,” Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris said in Dublin.
“There will be no peace in the Middle East without a two-state solution. And there can be no two-state solution without a Palestinian state.
“In other words, a Palestinian state is a prerequisite for achieving peace in the Middle East,” Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store said.
