A former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has thrown his support behind calls for a parliamentary system of government.
The former governor of Osun State, who made the call during a national dialogue on the constitutional future of Nigeria in honour of a renowned constitutional lawyer, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, said Nigeria could not survive the executive presidential system.
The dialogue was organised by the Patriots, a Pan-Nigerian Group of Eminent National Leaders of Thought, with the theme, “Lawful Procedures for Actualizing a People’s Constitution for Nigeria.”
“Can Nigeria survive executive presidential representation. The answer is no,” he said.
While making a case for the parliamentary system, the former minister stressed that productive representation must take the place of residence.
“In seeking appropriate democratic representation, let’s look at production as a basis of representation. We don’t have the best form of representation.
“People are engaged more in production. Productive acts and those engaged in production should be given the opportunity to elect their best,” Mr Aregbesola added.
