Argentina rout Croatia 3-0 in semifinal

Argentina beat Croatia, 3-0, in a World Cup semifinal Tuesday in Lusail, Qatar, moving to within one win of its first world championship since 1986.

The South American power beat the 2018 runner-up to advance to its sixth final, in which it will face either France or Morocco on Sunday.

A victory would be the crowning achievement for star Lionel Messi, who is probably playing in his final World Cup. Messi’s penalty kick late in the first half opened the scoring against Croatia, which was overmatched Tuesday. Continue reading for highlights from the game.

Argentina is now 6-0 in World Cup semifinals and will be playing for its third world championship after wins in 1978 and 1986. Messi became Argentina’s all-time scoring leader in World Cup play, passing Gabriel Batistuta with his 11th career World Cup goal.

Croatia was seeking its second consecutive appearance in the World Cup final. The Croatians eliminated top-ranked Brazil in the quarterfinals and No. 2 Belgium in the group stage, but they couldn’t get past No. 3 Argentina.

Argentina will face either France or Morocco in the final on Sunday, while Croatia will play the loser of Wednesday’s semifinal on Saturday in the third-place game.
