The deputy national publicity secretary of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Ibrahim Abdullahi, has disclosed that three major presidential candidates and former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, are working for a possible merger ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Mr Abdullahi, in an interview with Channels Television on Monday, said the candidates: Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigerian People’s Party, NNPP; Peter Obi of Labour Party, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar will put their personal interests aside to be able to wrestle power from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

While lamenting on the impact of the defection of Messers Kwankwaso and Obi, Mr Abdullahi blamed the former national chairman Iyorcha Ayu for failing to manage the crisis, saying the PDP would have defeated the APC in the last general election.

“We have lost Kwankwaso, we have lost Peter Obi — all of these people — imagine if they are in the party, we will have gone to win the elections,” he said.

“This APC said they defeated us with one million plus [votes], just one of these names that I mentioned would have covered that gap for us and we would have been in power today and certainly Nigerians would not have been confronted with this despair and despondency in the land.

“Sure, discussion is ongoing– You will see Peter Obi discussing with Atiku, you will see Peter Obi meeting with (Nasir) El-Rufai. Party management is a very difficult thing and we are doing the best in the quagmire that we have found ourselves.

“Rest assured, there would be light at the end of the tunnel. We have learnt our lesson in a bitter way,” he added.
