The Bauchi State House of Assembly has passed a vote of no confidence on the state Commissioner for Education, Dr. Aliyu Tilde, over alleged disrespect of the House’s Committee on Education last Friday.
According to a report by The Nation, the House also withdrew its confirmation of Mr Tilde as Education Commissioner, directing the Permanent Secretary of the ministry to continue with the budget defense.
Earlier, while raising a motion under matters of urgent public importance during Monday’s plenary, the chairman of the Committee on Education, Babayo Muhammad, informed the House that Mr Tilde had disrespected lawmakers during the budget defence of his ministry.
The lawmaker disclosed that the commissioner was supposed to appear before the committee at 10 am on Friday but did not come until after an hour.
He said: “While we were trying to explain ourselves to him, he interjected and enquired about who we were. We told him we are the legislators and another arm of government but he kept asking who we are.
“We asked him to go and come back for the defence when he realised we are something. We have eight days from today to end the budget defence proceedings.”
In his contribution, Yunusa Ahmad, the member representing Warji Constituency, said that the lawmakers were not against Mr Tilde but his policies and conduct.
Minority Leader, Bakoji Bobbo, explained that the action of the commissioner was unfortunate, adding there exists a good working relationship between the Assembly and the Executives.
He seconded the withdrawal of Mr Tilde’s confirmation as commissioner.
After the brief debate, the House unanimously passed a vote of no confidence on the commissioner and withdrew his confirmation done on August 17, 2021.
