The acting Chief Judge of Bauchi State, Justice Hamidu Kunaza, has ordered the release of 21 inmates serving various jail terms at the Bauchi Central Prison.
This is contained in a statement signed ASP Adam Jibrin, Spokesman of Bauchi state Command of the Nigeria Prisons Service (NPS).
According to a statement made available to journalists on Sunday in Bauchi, the prisoners were released when Justice Kunaza visited the prison.
It quoted Kunaza as saying that “the inmates were pardoned on grounds of ill health, old age and overstay in custody”.
The judge congratulated the discharged inmates, advised them to be law abiding and to avoid committing crimes that may bring them back to prison.
Kunaza commended the prison authorities for their untiring effort towards ensuring the welfare of the inmates.
Responding, Bauchi state Comptroller of Prisons, Alhaji Sidi Muhammad, expressed his appreciation for the regular visits being exhibited by the chief judge.
He said that his visits had given them confidence in discharging their responsibilities and called on the judge to make the visit a monthly routine towards decongesting the prison.
