The Hisbah Department in Bauchi State says it will continue to work with other security agencies with a view to reducing crime and criminal activities to the barest minimum in the state.
Aminu Balarabe, a Permanent Commissioner in charge of Hisbah and Sharia implementation made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Bauchi on Tuesday.
He said that the department would continue to arrest and prosecute criminal elements in the state, adding that it would not relent in settling other similar cases.
While calling for the understanding and cooperation of the public, Mr Balarabe urged them to continue to support the department through sharing of information and intelligence gathering towards curbing criminal activities capable of jeopardising peace in the state.
He said that the department had, in the last one year, prosecuted several civil and criminal cases in the courts and settled hundreds of matrimonial and contractual cases emanating from daily transactions among individuals.
The commissioner also urged the state government to hasten upon the establishment of Hisbah board to enable the department to enjoy some measure of autonomy and perform effectively and efficiently.
“As a lawyer, I know that when a board is established, we will have more powers to operate and make more impact,” he said.
Mr Balarabe called for the provision of more logistics, befitting office accommodation and operational vehicles for wider and effective coverage of all the 20 local government areas of the state.
He explained that the laws prohibiting sales and consumption of alcohol and other narcotic substances, prostitution and armed banditry (Sara-Suka) would be fully implemented, stressing there would be no sacred cow.
Mr Balarabe lauded the Governor Bala Mohammed-led administration’s unflinching support to the department, saying that this had enabled it to operate unhindered.
Recall that no fewer than 75 personnel of the department in the state were recently sent to Kano, Zamfara and Kebbi states to understudy the operations of Hisbah boards in those states with a view to replicating it in Bauchi State.
