Some officials of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC, in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State on Monday clashed with suspected illegal taskforce members over alleged extortion of electricity customers in the area.
DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that the clash followed an allegation of money extortion from BEDC customers in wake of continued blackout in the area and its environs.
According to a source who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the clash left many persons injured, amongst which was a police officer.
An eyewitness, Felix John, said the police officer was chased by his assailants in a long race, but unfortunately got trapped in a hole where he was allegedly stabbed twice on his head and face, leaving him in his pool of blood.
The state Commissioner of Police, Hafiz Inuwah, who confirmed the incident, said some persons had been arrested and detained for further investigation.
He assured that the police would do everything possible to ensure justice in the matter.
A staff of BEDC who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity described the incident as unfortunate.
He alleged that the BEDC boss in the area was using his cronies to take over the job of employed staff of the company.
“The business manager recruited these boys who are not staff of BEDC and they go about intimidating and harassing unsuspecting customers just to extort money from them and pay returns to him.
“One of them even boasted that they were the ones in charge because they settle the business manager between N40,000 and N80,000 daily.
Reacting, the business manager, Bethel Ebiuwhe, denied the allegation, saying: “I don’t talk to Journalists, and I don’t know what you are talking about.
“All I know is that I am not involved in any scandal nor did I mandate anyone to work for me.”
