Barrister Aisha Wakil, popularly known as Mama Boko Haram, has been nominated for the 2019 Sydney Peace Award, Lawal Shoyode, the Country Director of Complete Care and Aid Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation established by Mrs Wakil to impact on victims of Boko Haram crisis, has said.
DAILY NIGERIAN reports that Mrs Wakil is known for her mediating role played between the Boko Haram insurgents and the Nigerian government in the heydays of the insurgency in the North-eastern part of the country.
In a statement on Sunday, Mr Shoyede said: “Mama Boko is among those nominated for the respected Sydney Peace Award in faraway Australia for her efforts in seeing an end to the Boko Haram crisis in North East Nigeria.”
“Barrister Aisha Wakil’s efforts to see peace return to troubled North East is being recognized outside Nigerian shores.”
According to him, Mrs Wakil was noted as a bridge to Boko Haram insurgents, lamenting that it had been discovered that many people were only frustrating her peace efforts.

He added that some people don’t want the crisis to stop as they are benefiting directly from the insurgency.
“Those fuelling this are people that matter, they have many a times side-lined her because they know that she will not allow them to play ball.”
The country director pointed out that Mrs Wakil had received peace awards by the Nigeria Boys’ Scout in Benue and Borno States.
Other awards received by Mrs Wakil, according to him, include Leadership and Peace Award in Morocco and early this month she was awarded the African Peace Icon in Ghana.
According to him, all these are proofs to her sincere effort in bringing peace to Borno State, North East and Nigeria as a whole.
