Former vice president Atiku Abubakar is coasting to victory at the national convention of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Port Harcourt as sorting of ballots comes to an end.

About 7,000 delegates have participated in the voting, which kicked off past mid-night on Sunday.

Preliminary assessment of the sorting pattern shows Mr Abubakar’s agent, Dubem Onyia, received the highest votes cast by the delegates.

An agent of one of the low-scoring aspirants who spoke to DAILY NIGERIAN shortly after the conclusion of sorting, said the former vice president in a pole position to pick the ticket.

“From my observation, Atiku’s agent received the highest ballots during sorting. Tambuwal too received a lot of ballots. At the end of the day, it is either Atiku or Tambuwal,” he said.

Already party leaders have begun congratulating Mr Atiku as counting may start any moment.
