Suspected bandits on Tuesday stormed Tabbani village in Rabah Local Government Area of Sokoto State, and killed a district head, Usman Mohammed, and 45 others.
Credible sources in the village told DAILY NIGERIAN that the gunmen set the village ablaze and shot sporadically at fleeing villagers.
Multiple sources, including the son of the slain district head, Aliyu Ibrahim, confirmed the attack, with others saying they counted 50 bodies at Gandi Hospital.
“The bandits first set the whole village on fire and then started shooting people fleeing from the fire.
“The village is now deserted. The lucky ones who survived the attack are now seeking refuge at Gandi town,” Iro Aminu, a local who survived the attack, told DAILY NIGERIAN.
The spokesman for the Sokoto Police Command, Cordelia Nwawe, confirmed the attack but said the command could not ascertain the casualty figure at the moment.
“The situation is now under control. The command will issue statement and give full details tomorrow,” she added.
