UPDATED: Scores feared dead in midnight Boko Haram attack in Maiduguri

Several people died, while others sustained injuries as Boko Haram terrorists launched deadly attack on Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.

DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that the insurgents came in high number attempting to enter into Maiduguri through Customs House area but met resistance from the Nigerian troops.

Witnesses told our reporter that they tried to storm into Yerwa through the newly constructed Customs House, where Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, from Ajiri and Anadua in Mafa Local Government Areas were camped.

“Alhamdulillahi for being alive. BH attack was defeated. Boko Haram tried to storm into Maiduguri metropolis, but our gallant soldiers defeated them,” said a witness who craved anonymity.

An inside source told DAILY NIGERIAN that “all the dreaded BH boys were killed by our gallant soldiers including many suicide bombers who also tried to infiltrate into Yerwa”.

“We are right now beside our residential gates at 505 (Housing Units here in Maiduguri), security agencies and ambulances could be seen conveying those affected from Muna customs camp to hospital,” he said.

Reacting to the incident, the spokesman of Borno Police Command, Victor Isuku, on Friday said in a statement that a suspected suicide bomber detonated his explosive in the midst of 13 trucks along Maiduguri/ Mafa road leading to mass destruction.

“On Thursday at about 2318 hrs, a suicide bomber sneaked into the midst of 13 pick-up trucks loaded with goods along Maiduguri/Mafa road, said to be awaiting departure to Gamboru Ngala in the early hours of Friday.

“He detonated an Improvised Explosive Devise (IED) strapped on his body.

“The resulting explosion razed the parked vehicles beyond recognition.

“A police patrol team was promptly deployed in the scene to restore safety and normalcy,” Mr Isuku said.
