By Mustapha Buhari, Maiduguri
The leader of Boko Haram sect, Abubakar Shekau, has released a new audio, claiming responsibility for the latest suicide attacks on University of Maiduguri.
Multiple blasts on Monday hit the university, with the worst claiming the life of a professor and three other worshippers at the staff quarters mosque.
On December 29, the Boko Haram elusive leader appeared in a video, dismissing claims by the Nigerian authorities that they had been routed from their Sambisa Forest stronghold.
Claiming responsibility in the audio clip obtained by VOA Hausa Service, Mr. Shekau began his reading his message with quotations from the Qur’an, after which he spoke in Hausa.
“The bomb was detonated in the morning, and here I am speaking in the afternoon. You call us Boko Haram, yes western education is prohibited,” he said in the audio.
He said they attacked the mosque because “it’s not a mosque” as Islam should not be mixed with “democracy”.
Mr. Shekau was apparently referring to the university as a place where Islam does not approve of.
He said they would sustain the attack until the Day of Dudgement, and called on people to follow their path if they want to practice the real Islam.
Mr. Shekau also insisted that they were still not defeated by the Nigerian Army.
