The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Kano has declared the candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, Nasiru Gawuna, winner of the Kano governorship election.
Nullifying the election of Governor Abba Yusuf, the tribunal ruled that he was not elected by the majority of lawful votes.
DAILY NIGERIAN reports that the grounds upon which the court declared Mr Gawuna as validly elected are that both the 1st and 3rd respondents admitted over-voting.
The tribunal therefore held that over voting amounting to 200,000 votes alleged by the petitioner are true.
The also court cancelled some of the votes credited to NNPP candidate, and deducted same from his total votes and declared Mr Gawuna as winner.
On March 20, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declared NNPP’s Abba Yusuf, as winner of the March 18 governorship election in Kano State.
The state returning officer, Prof. Doko Ibrahim, the vice-chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, said Mr Yusuf polled 1,019,602 votes to clinch the seat, while Mr Gawuna polled 890,705 votes.
