UPDATED: Violence breaks out in Sabon Gari, Kano

Violence on Tuesday evening erupted in Sabon Gari area of Kano metropolis as irate youth went on rampage.

Sabon Gari, inhabited largely by non-indegenes, is the epicenter of ethnic and religious violence in the state.

Security sources told DAILY NIGERIAN that the crisis began when officials of Hisbah went to make arrest at a red light district of Ballat Hughes Road.

“At the moment, I can’t tell you specifically what transpired between the Hisbah officials and the youth. All I can say is that the Hisbah operation went awry, and youth started attacking and burning places,” said a security agent.

Witnesses said there was stampede around Sabon Gari area as bonfires were set by hoodlums.

Other sources said some people were killed and many others injured in the clash.

UPDATE

Spokesman for Kano Police Command, Abdullahi Kiyawa, said the police have controlled the situation immediately.

“On the 14th December, 2021 at 8:15pm, we received a report that Hisbah officials have raided a liquor shop in Sabon Gari.

“During the raid, some hoodlums attacked them, injuring two Hisbah officials and vandalising one of their vehicles.

“The Commissioner of Police, Samaila Dikko, immediately despatched a team of policemen, which succeeded in arresting 26 people.

“The suspects are currently being interrogated at the command headquarters. Whoever found wanting after investigation will be prosecuted,” Mr Kiyawa, a deputy superintendent of police, said.
