The European Commission says it will grant 6.2 billion euros (6.8 billion U.S. dollars) to over 100 projects aimed at making transport in the bloc greener and safer.
According to the commission on Thursday, the biggest part of the funding will go into the modernisation of railways, inland waterways and maritime routes.
A 55-kilometre-long railway tunnel through the Alps to link Austria and Italy, the Brenner Base tunnel currently under construction, is to receive 700 million euros in financial support.
Maritime and inland ports in countries including Ireland, Greece, Spain, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland and Austria are to receive funding to gut emissions from moored vessels.
A total of 250 million euros to improve cross-border connections between Ukraine, Moldova and their neighbouring countries in the EU, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland, said EU Transport Commissioner Adina Valean.
Funding is also to go into improving air traffic management.
The grants are part of a commission programme for 2021 to 2027 to support the modernisation of transport infrastructure in the EU with a total of 25.8 billion euros.
