A former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of giving the nod to remove the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi ll.

On Monday, the Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State had dethroned the emir over alleged violation of culture and traditions of the state.

Consequently, the monarch was banished to Nasarawa State where is expected to spend the rest of his life.

In his reaction, Mr Kwankwaso told BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday that Kano State Government officials had been saying that they were directed by President Buhari to remove the emir.

“Also, considering the way federal security operatives were used in sealing off the palace and denying the emir his fundamental human rights, it is our belief that there must be an order from Abuja.”

“In Kano, we are made to understand that Buhari does not intervene in matters that he is supposed to, and interferes in matters which he is not supposed to,” Mr Kwankwaso said.

The former governor also described the removal of the emir as a sad development in Kano, Nigeria and the world as a whole, saying that no responsible government would remove Mr Sanusi.

Mr Kwankwaso, however, denied the insinuation that he issued query twice to Mr Sanusi, saying “I had never issued a query to His Highness or do something similar”.

On the allegations that the Kwankwasiyya followers contributed to fueling the crisis between Governor Ganduje and the emir, Mr Kwankwaso denied the claim, saying: “Kwankwasiyya ideology is always behind the truth and justice”.

According to him, to the best of his knowledge, Mr Sanusi’s sin was his comment on the eve of the 2019 governorship election when he said that whoever wins should be given his mandate.
