President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the reappointment of Professor Mahmood Yakubu as chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for another five-year term.
Mr Yakubu’s first tenure would end on November 9.
DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that the appointment of chairman of INEC and commissioners is subject to nomination by the president, ratification by the Council of State and confirmation by the Senate.
In a letter to President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, the Mr Buhari said the nomination is in accordance with the provision of Section 154 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).
“I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate, the nomination of Professor Mahmood Yakubu for appointment as Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for a second and final term,” the letter reads in part.
