Barring last-minute changes, President Muhammadu Buhari is set to appoint Abubakar Adamu Mohammed as the new Inspector-General of Police, replacing Ibrahim Idris who is retiring tomorrow (Tuesday).
DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that Mr Buhari’s decision to appoint Mr Mohammed followed mounting pressures from opposition calling on the President to rescind on his alleged move to extend the tenure of IGP Ibrahim Idris to three months.
A source at the presidency told our correspondent that the president had since zeroed his mind on extending the tenure of the current IGP who is due for retirement this month.
Though there has not been any official statement from the government, a source closed to the presidency confirmed that Mr Mohammed’s appointment would be made public on Tuesday (tomorrow).
Mr Mohammed, popularly known as Mohammed Lafia, was, until his appointment, an assistant inspector-general in charge of Zone 5.
Mr Mohammed, who hails from Lafia, Nasarawa State, was born on November 9, 1961.
He enlisted in the police in 1986. He has a Bachelor’s degree in geography.
He was at one time a director of peacekeeping operations. He is a former police commissioner in Enugu.
