President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the suspension of 12 directors of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over alleged involvement in the corruption allegation against the embattled former chairman of the commission, Ibrahim Magu.
The Commission Secretary, Olanipekun Olukoyede, was also affected by the order.
Recall that Mr Magu is facing a Justice Ayo Salami-led Presidential Panel over an alleged corruption.
DAILY NIGERIAN reports that Mr Magu was kept in custody at the Force Criminal Investigation Department, FCID, on July 6, when he was whisked away by the operatives of the Department of State Security Services, SSS.
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, had in a statement said the suspension is to allow for “unhindered inquiry” by the Presidential Investigation Panel under the Tribunals of Inquiry Act and other relevant laws.
The panel also invited many EFCC chiefs for questioning over involvement in Mr Magu’s corruption allegation.
Subsequently, President Buhari ordered their suspension to pave way for the continuation of the ongoing probe against the suspended acting chairman of the commission, Mr Magu.
It was gathered that the order was handed down to the directors by the Attorney General on Tuesday, in compliance with the presidential order.
“The panel actually requested the suspension of all the directors of the EFCC to go to enable the panel members to carry out a thorough investigation into the activities of the commission.
“Following the request, the President asked the AGF to direct the directors and other senior officials to proceed on suspension immediately. The officials were informed on Tuesday,” The Punch quoted a source as saying so.
