Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria, CORBON, has called on governors to enact and enforce state planning laws as a way of curbing building collapse across Nigeria.
Dr Samson Opaluwah, Chairman of CORBON, made the call at the 35th anniversary and 24th induction ceremony of CORBON on Thursday in Abuja.
Mr Opaluwah said ,”In recent times, we have witnessed a disturbing trend of building collapses, often resulting in tragic loss of lives and property.
“This highlights the need for urgent action by all.
“As a council, we are taking a bold step to engage with state governors to enact and enforce state planning laws that will ensure adherence to building codes and standards.
“We believe this will drastically address the issue of building collapse in Nigeria. We must work together to prevent such tragedies and ensure that our buildings are safe, functional and aesthetically pleasing.”
Mr Opaluwah said that the council inaugurated the Registered Builders Disciplinary Tribunal to help curb building collapses.
He added that by recommending stricter enforcement of building regulations, improved supervision, and the adoption of modern construction techniques as key measures to prevent future building collapses.
He said that these efforts were expected to reduce youth unemployment, decrease the housing deficit, address substandard products, and improve maintenance culture, ultimately enhancing the quality of life in the country.
